ABOUT THE ARCHIVE

An important source for studying the past of Bosnia and Herzegovina
The Bosniak Institute Archive, initially established as a private collection by its founder Adil Zulfikarpašić, gradually grew over decades of research and collection efforts by Adil and his wife Tatjana Zulfikarpašić. The Archive, in terms of its content, extends beyond the framework of family and personal collections, offering insights into the historical, political, social, and cultural circumstances of Bosnia and Herzegovina from the medieval period to the early 21st century. Following the establishment of the Bosniak Institute in Zurich in 1998, and its relocation to Sarajevo in 2001, the Archive became an integral part of the Institute, ensuring institutional management in the collection, processing, protection, and accessibility of its materials for scientific and research purposes.
Archive Holdings
The archive is divided into six main collections: the Bosna Collection, the Acta Turcica Collection, the Socialist Yugoslavia 1945-1991 Collection, the Emigrantica 1946-1990 Collection, the Photographs, Postcards, and Awards Collection, and the Personal and Family Archival Funds. The collections were named by Adil Zulfikarpašić during the process of gathering materials, with the Personal and Family Archival Funds named after the owners of the written legacies. The archive is accessible for search through both analytical and summary-analytical inventories. Part of the collection, however, is not open to the public, as per the decision of the founder, Adil Zulfikarpašić. In addition to the summary-analytical inventory, in 2020, the Institute published a Guide to the Archive of the Bosniak Institute – Adil Zulfikarpašić Foundation, available also in e-format (see the "Catalogs/Collection Search" section on the web portal).
Enrichment of the Collection
The majority of the archive's holdings were created while the Institute was in Zurich, through the efforts and dedication of Adil Zulfikarpašić. Since the opening of the Institute in Sarajevo, the collection has continued to grow through acquisitions and donations, ranging from individual documents and archival materials to entire or fragmented family and personal collections.
